  • In vitro, Kutaja shrinks calcium oxalate crystals that cause kidney stones.
  • The extract reduces cell toxicity and lactate dehydrogenase synthesis. In vivo testing in rats revealed a significant reduction in polyurea, water consumption, calcium excretion, and crystal formation.

Dysentery :

Kutaj is useful in digestive disorders like dysentery. Dysentery is known as Pravahika in Ayurveda and is caused by vitiated Kapha and Vata doshas. In severe dysentery, inflammation of the intestine causes the appearance of mucus and blood in the stool. Taking Kutaj helps to control mucus by improving the digestive fire. This is because of its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachan (digestive) properties. It also controls blood by reducing the inflammation of the intestine due to its Sita (cold) and Kashaya (astringent) properties.

This leads to the impairment of all the three doshas, mainly Vata. An aggravated Vata causes a low digestive fire, leading to constipation. This causes swelling in the veins in the rectum area leading to piles mass. Sometimes bleeding can also occur in this condition. Kutaj helps to improve digestive fire because of its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachan (digestive) properties. It also controls bleeding due to its Kashaya (astringent) nature.

Antibacterial Benefits of Kutaja :

Kutaja has the strongest antibacterial action against Staphylococcus. However, the action is slightly less against Salmonella and E. coli.

Anti-parasitic Activity of Kutaja :

  • In rats and hamsters, Kutaja demonstrated potential effectiveness against experimental amoebiasis.
  • In addition, the fruit extract has an antiprotozoal activity against human Entamoeba histolytica and Trypanosoma evansi.

Anti-diarrheal Benefits of Kutaja :

  • As per in vivo experiments, for castor oil-induced diarrhoea in rats, ethanolic seed extracts of Kutaja showed a considerable rise in the dry weight of stools and a reduction in defaecation drops.
  • Enteroinvasive E. coli, Shigella flexneri, Shigella boydii, and Salmonella enteritidis are all susceptible to bark extracts.
  • In addition, the diarrhoeal pathogens Salmonella typhimurium, Vibrio cholerae, and Vibrio alginolyticus were inhibited by leaf extracts of Kutaja.

Beneficial for women :

The seeds of this herb are beneficial for promoting conception. Also, consuming the seeds after delivery helps to tone up vaginal tissues and strengthens the muscles.

Antioxidant Benefits of Kutaja :

  • Kutaja leaf extracts were shown to scavenge superoxide ions and hydroxyl ions and have a lower ability to convert ferric (Fe3+) to ferrous (Fe2+).
  • The plant’s seed extracts also inhibited the formation of different components and ions and lipid peroxidation, indicating its antioxidant activities.

Diarrhea :

Diarrhea is known as Atisar in Ayurveda. It is due to improper food, impure water, toxins, mental stress, and Agnimandya (weak digestive fire). All these factors are responsible for aggravating Vata. This aggravated Vata brings fluid into the intestine from various tissues of the body and mixes with the stool. This leads to loose, watery motions or diarrhea. Kuta helps to control diarrhea by improving the digestive fire. This is due to its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachan (digestive) properties. It also makes the stool thick and controls water loss due to its Grahi (absorbent) and Kashaya (astringent) properties.
